I have the pleasure of being in conversation with highly capable people who find themselves impacted by their biological inability to move. In this article I’d like to share the potential cost of running on discipline for far too long, and the practical steps you can take whether you already find yourself impacted or on the way there.

Let’s begin with the fact that every move you make out of disciplined approach of “have to” and “should” adds yet another brick to a future wall that will block progress.
This is more of a statement of “when” rather than “if”.
If you’ve ever trained a dog, which I’m in the process of at the moment, you’ll know that every action and non-action contribute to the conditioned behaviour down the line.
You feed a dog once at the table, the higher the chance they’ll be associating your meal time with their treat time.
We can apply the same logic here. Every time you push, force, and make yourself do something that goes against a certain aspect of you, the more you train that part of you that you don’t have their best interests at hand.
Over time, these are the parts that begin to create sabotage, which we later call “self” sabotage, curiously and innocently wondering where the heck did they come from as if out of the blue.
The habit-building industry and message have somewhat of a blame here. We simply got conditioned into listening some expert we read about on the internet or in a book to the detriment of our own signs and symptoms.
You’re told you should do this, and shouldn’t do that.
Then all of a sudden you sabotage your promotion, a big client, your growth and expansion…
Because you know what that means?
It means that part of you that has already been calling for your attention and being continuously suppressed will end up even more abandoned and get even further and further away from ever being heard by you.
So you end up with your mentally conditioned mind pulling one way wanting to go bigger and faster, and another part of you, typically your biology and your body throwing up a strike because you’ve been ignoring it for so long.
Hence every disciplined action is yet another brick laid in the protective wall of the future
Can you see how working on developing your habits is also the very same thing working in the opposite direction as well when you’re fighting against the conversation already happening in your system…
This applies to health and your weight goals.
The way you show up in relationships.
And the way you earn money and strive for results.
The more you use effort in your attempt to achieve something, the bigger the resentment will be, whether you do end up getting the outcome you set out for, or not!
Feel free to catch up on the recent Alex Hormozi and Tony Robbins interview if you haven’t already to see what happens when you run on “screw happiness” engine for too long.
This is where you blow up at your partner because you’ve done all these things for them and in return you got nothing.
This is where you make a big business move, and end up feeling empty.
This is where your own body, and life, magically orchestrate the perfect storm of circumstance to prevent you from continuing the way you’ve been operating.
I’m just the messenger in this whole dynamic, typically being called in to assist in this new phase of transition. So in a way, congratulations if you’re finding yourself here!
So what’s this other way to perform if not from the disciplined action of “have to” and “should”?
This is what Jung called the process of Individuation – bringing all parts of you into one conversation.
It’s like making an agreement with your 5 year old. We’ll play for 5 more minutes and then bed time, okay?
It’s about making it a Win-Win-Win situation for all parties involved, even though we’re talking about just the one you. 😅
When your body says “I can’t continue like this”, you actually learn to listen to it.
When your mind says “Sorry but we have to do this to keep being liked”, you actually see it for what it is, a sacrificial self-abandonment that records it as “relationships and success come at a cost, so we better avoid them next time”.
Part of this journey of course is to see why we’ve been sold into operating from discipline in the first place.
The same part that contributed to the idea that “I’m only valuable when I produce and perform” or that “my sustenance comes from hard work”.
These are all of the contributing bricks in the foundation of potential future sabotage, if you’re not facing it all directly already.
If any of this resonates, you see the idea that disciplined action that goes against some of the other “weaker” parts of you is actually helping that “weaker” part grow stronger by feeding the unconscious monster, and this peaks your curiosity about this new way to continue to produce and perform without the sabotage…
Or if you’re already stalled and hiding in agonizing confusion and shame of having lost your clarity, energy, and productivity, not sure where to turn to…
